Evaluating Pearls - Surface Quality
The surface of a pearl is made up of many layers of nacre built up over time. The condition of its surface is evaluated according to its smoothness and the presence or absence of blemishes. A blemish refers to any surface imperfection on a pearl. As pearls are gems created by living organisms, perfect pearls are rare. Like our human skin, slight imperfections often occur in the form of marks, spots, ridges and colour inconsistencies.
